Family Liaison Project is
Pointing you in the right direction:

School starts August 18th here are a few tips:

Over the weekend hold a family meeting  (include snacks, poster board, highlighters, and a note taker)
  • During the meeting everyone gets to offer a suggestion to make Monday morning go smoothly.
  • Use the poster board to record the points once they are discussed and voted on. (Positive ideas should never be discouraged, if a negative comment is made let's turn it around).
  • Parents should set the guidelines of the meeting.

(for younger children remember the average attention

span your child - try to use few words)

  • Pick out clothes the night prior to school, also locate shoes and clean socks, (give the child a choice of 2 outfits that way they feel like they are making the decision)
  • Establish times to leave for school, what they can expect during their day, what time school ends, how will they get home and when you will be home.  (Don't assume they know all the information from last year)
  • Write the time in digital form on the poster, and use an index card for the refrigerator as a reminder.  (we will leave the house at 7:00 AM)
  • Examples:

    1. Write the order in which you expect your child to complete the morning living skills. (Ie: When you have completed bathroom visit, wash hands, eat breakfast, brush teeth, dress yourself, make your bed, then cartoons...)
    2. Follow through on the "when you...  then you may"  is mandatory in order for this to be successful. You may hear a few grumbles in the beginning but this works and you end up with less stress.
    3. Have the kids mark an "X" on the spot where the backpack belongs.  It should be in their favorite color, use colored tape, or construction arrows, something they decide on, and then that is where the backpac belongs.
    4. Establish Homework time and place. (It does not hurt to sit with the kids just to establish they understand the homework).

Leave at 7:15 AM Points to Earn

Remember we all want positive rewards at the end of a hard day.  (Positives can be TV time, computer time, Mom and Me

time, etc).

If a child has earned a positive reward please do not take it aways as a consequence for negative behavior or junk behavior,

 FLP = Family Liaison Project

Educational Liaisons and Advocates

The Family Liaison Project is a program designed to assist  families of Brevard County answer questions regarding their students educational placement, program and enhancement.

The FLP started in the year 2000.  A garage transformed by volunteers painting, cleaning, collecting donated funiture, and a passion to meet the needs of other parents in Brevard County were the original components that started the Family Liaison Project.

The Liaisons are parents of students' with learning differences, have had educational accommodations, modifications and plans. Before FCAT was an every day acronym, the Liaisons met with parents who felt lost in a maze of acronyms and educational concerns.

We started by serving 25 families and developed a program serving over a thousand of Brevard's population.  Collaboration with Brevard County's Exceptional Student Education Department, and other agencies in the county has allowed the program to grow into a huge success.

While we don't have the answer to every question a parent may ask, we will try to find the resource, agency or professional who does.

We are known to embrace a challenge, walk the mile beside you, and assist you in the day to day decisions for your child.
